Scarlett Johansson and ‘The Look’The sequence involved Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow character. Following a skirmish, she is ostensibly on the run from the Winter Soldier, but is actually trying to lure him along. The off-camera portions of the street and sidewalk are filled with cables, carts, camera equipment, tracks, trucks, tents and tape. A host of extras are standing by to scatter on cue.
It’s a grueling day for Johansson’s Black Widow and Stan’s Winter Soldier, or rather for the performers’ stunt doubles, Heidi Moneymaker and Justin Sundquist. Moneymaker, in a brown leather jacket, black pants, brown boots and red wig, will make multiple runs on the street. The Russos are shooting with three cameras simultaneously.

The words “fire in the hole” crackle across the walkie-talkies, and suddenly there is gunfire and extras are sent scrambling up the street followed by Moneymaker-as-Johansson-as-Black Widow.
The most mobile camera is the one mounted on the “Maverick,” a Yamaha motorcycle built into a golf cart-looking vehicle. It has a driver, but the camera is operated by remote control as it scurries into the midst of the mayhem for tracking shots or tight, on-the-move zooms.
After several takes, it is time for the actual star. Johansson, who rented a house in Lakewood during the shoot, was familiar with Cleveland, having spent time here in 2011 making “The Avengers.” She also played Black Widow, aka Natasha Romanoff, in “Iron Man 2” and will reprise the role in “The Avengers: Age of Ultron.”
(Plans for a Black Widow stand-alone film after that may depend on her personal schedule: She is expecting her first child with boyfriend Romain Dauriac.)
“Why don’t we have Scarlett look while she’s on the move?” says Joe. “Don’t ever stop. Have her do the look on the run.”
Anthony adds, “When she looks back, she should smile, sell the look. Let us know it’s a plan.”
“Right,” agrees Joe. “Come get me.”

Johansson does a few takes then ducks into the tent to look at the footage. She is followed inside by her makeup woman and hair woman. As Scarlett reviews the footage, standing next to Joe and Anthony, the makeup woman applies some eyeliner, while the hair woman fusses with a few looses strands on Scarlett’s wig. The makeup woman then hands Scarlett some lip gloss, which she applies herself, all the time examining the shots and talking with the directors.
“Hit the coin thing when you come up,” says Joe.
“What coin thing?” asks Scarlett.
Joe points to the parking meter on his screen.
The shot is reset.
Scarlett runs, ducks, pops up, delivers the look, and books it down West Third Street. She did her part, but it was a little bit out of focus, so they shoot it again. This time, she gives the look but her hair gets in the way. Another take. She runs too wide. One more. She nails it. Cut.
“Tell Scarlett the performance was perfect,” says Joe.
“That’s lunch!”
Lunch is an elaborate production. Several grills and a huge tent have been erected in the shadow of the Browns’ stadium. The crew has its choice of steak, spaghetti, chicken, pork, vegetables, rice and salad overflowing from multiple tables. The enormous parking lot behind the stadium is filled with trailers.
Joe and Anthony grab plates and head back to one of their trailers. Joe is having a steak with spaghetti and meatballs. Anthony is having rice, beans and a salad. Joe avoids caffeine. His afternoon pick-me-up is chocolate. We talked for about an hour. Here are excerpts. ©
