Was one reason for you to make this film to make story of Australia more familiar to the people or did you just want to tell a big love story and make grand cinema?
For me, I wanted to work with Baz Luhrmann again, so he was the same director of Moulin Rouge, and I loved the idea of doing something really romantic, which was set against the landscape of Australia. And this combination of Baz with the landscape and with Mr Jackman, that is was interesting.
You both are Australians. How does it live as a visitor from Down Under in Hollywood? You just got an interesting charge (to Hugh), about which we will talk about later, so it seems as if Hollywood embraced you as well. But how is Australia in Hollywood? Are you regarded as a foreigner or are you part of the town?
Right now I think we´re part of the town. I mean, many Australians work there in fact and a lot of people want to know who I really am Australian and that´s how you get work. For what of reasons a lot of us are there. We´re just cheaper. We only take the half.

With Australia we all know that for you it wasn´t about just signing a big contract, and exactly you (to Nicole), you just mentioned it, wanted to work with Baz Luhrmann, with who you did Moulin Rouge, a wonderful movie, as well, you wanted to work with him. This is a real epic. It reminds you of such big movies like "Lawrence of Arabia" and "Doktor Shiwago". Did you see the risk that you make big narrative cinema in a time, where movies are actually made for a very young audience, the sixth Spiderman, the fifth Harry Potter. One asks what they like, sometimes it even are video games, to say "We need the very young audience." This is a movie for the target audience who loves cinema and cinema for adults. Was that a risk?
Yeah. I mean, this is a movie movie. That means, that it´s, I read one review what said, that it is three movies in one. And I think that is of kind three movies. We talk about the indeginous people of the country, the Aboriginies, which are called the stolen generation. So we deal with that and we have a love story in back with war sequences and the bombing of Darwin, a city in Australia, which was bombed during the war. So with all that it really is an old - school type of movie (the poster says: Nicole I want a picture with you) But it´s entertaining, you can bring popcorn and say "That is what I am gonna watch".
In Germany the film will be in theatres on Christmas.
Hugh was greatly honoured, but also a big challenge, if the rumor is true, but I got to know it yesterday. You reportedly will host the Oscars.
It´s true, yeah. It´s true. They actually should first applaud after I´ve done it.But I first was rang up the information in the middle of the night. It was about two nights ago and we were in a hotel. I don´t know what time it was, but I thought the phone call was the wake -up call from the operator. So I literally picked up the phone and put straight down again. It rang again and I said "Yes I heard it" and (here I don´t understand everything) and the message came through and it took me for about five minutes to really get what was happening, in the middle of the night.So this message was a shock, but really exciting and I feel very honoured. And you have to give me tips.
It could be that I missed something, because one hour earlier my phone rang and I hadn´t answered it as well.
I was thinking of bringing the "doing your pants up" (a funny bet of the show). Maybe that would work.

Hugh doesn´t know the story of our digger bets, we already dressed off women with diggers (joke), you missed that unfortunately. Today one paddles.
